Swaffham celebrates 800 years of market trading.
Swaffham is a centuries old market town
Henry II granted Swaffham a charter in 1215 to hold a market as well as the three existing fairs per year. Market traders sold their wares at the market while cattle & livestock were sold at the fairs. These were held on the 12th May, 21st July and the 3rd November. Following action from Dunham market the king issued a writ to prevent Swaffham continuing to trade, however the writ was never served and 800 years later the market continues to this day. |
